Windows 8 MIC Settings

Figure out how to check if your mic is correctly configured, and fix the settings if it isn’t.

If your microphone is not working, or if you tried our mic test and the horizontal line was not moving. So something might be wrong with your mic settings in Laptop or PC.

 

Follow the steps below to see what is wrong with the microphone settings:

 

Step 1: Take the cursor to the top-right of your Laptop or PC screen. A menu will appear. Click Settings on the menu.

 

Step 2: The Settings menu will show up. Click Control Panel.

 

Step 3: Click “Hardware and Sound“.

 

Step 4: Under Sound click “Manage Audio Devices“.

 

 

Step 5: Click on “Recording tabcheck recording devices available ( Microphones ). Try speak into your mic and look for green bars moving when you speak.

 

Step 6: If you see green bars moving when you speak, that means your mic is properly configured.

If your mic does show green bars moving but still can’t capture any sound, keep following the instructions.

 

Step 7: See if you can check which one of the devices in the list is your mic. Click on the relevant device to select it, and then click on “Set as Default Device

 

Step 8: Double-click on the selected device and a new window will open up .In that window, click on the “Levels” tab.

 

Step 9: Move the “Microphone” slider all the way to the right, until the max level ‘100’ is displayed beside it. You can also move the “Microphone Boost” slider to increase the gain.

 

Step 10: Now check again  green bars moves when you speak into the mic of your Laptop or PC.  If green bars are moving, your mic is now properly configured. If you tried following these steps for all the devices but still  green bars are not moving, click here

 

What To Do If You Did See Green Bars Moving But Your Mic Is Still Not Working In Some Program or Applications

If your microphone is still not working in some program or applications, means Windows is configured correctly and can “hear” through your microphone, but the program or application you’re using can’t. (to check that, test your microphone with our mic test tool. Sometimes the program or application you’re using might be listening to the wrong microphone. Try to explore their audio settings and change its default recording device. If the microphone is still not working with the program, try reinstalling it or contact their support.

What To Do If You Don’t See The Green Bars Moving On Any Of The Devices?

If your microphone doesn’t seem to be working, or if you tried our microphone test and the line wasn’t moving, something might be wrong with your microphone settings.

Follow the steps below to see what went wrong:

 

Step 1: Right click inside the Recording tab (Steps 1-4). A menu will appear. Click and select the Show Disabled Devices option.

 

This might add extra devices to the list. Perform steps 5-10 on those devices too, until you see the green bars when talking into the mic.
